Former famous ball player. Shortstop on the old Active's in the 1870's

Augustus Albert Mrs. Henry Blessing, 813 Chestnut street, received a telegram announc lng the death and burial In Denver, Col., of her brother, Augustus Albert, aged 50 years, formerly a Reading ball player, who was prominent in the national game many years ago. The news came as a surprise to Mr, Albert's relatives in this city, as no word had been received from him or any member of his family for several years. Deceased was a native of Reading and started life as a blacksmith in the employ of the Reading Iron Company, but became Interested in baseball as a young man and followed this game during the greater part of his life. In the 70's Albert joined the Actives, one of the most famous ball aggregations the city has ever had, and for several years played the shortstop position. After leaving Reading he played with Brooklyn, Wilmington and other teams with which he made good. As he grew older he played with a number of pennant winning outfits in Canada and devoted many years to following professional ball. He was with tdaiM In Mlltxfl 11 Ire a Wlnnnnsln and Bartelsville, Oklahoma and later was a player, manager and umpire. Mr. Albert for a time was engaged in the hotel business In Milwaukee, and was urged to run for sheriff while living in Oklahoma. He was married and leaves a wife and three children, Francis, Eva and Mary, living In Denver. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic church and the Liberty Fire I Comnan was a son George Albert, who is still living here and a brother of Mrs. Mary Blemlng.
