Mary Ellen Matthies, age 73, Kiel, died Thursday, December 24, 2015 at her residence with her family by her side.

Mary Ellen was born on December 23, 1942, daughter of the late Gerald and Bernice (Streiber) Wick in Kiel. She attended SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School, Kiel, graduating from Kiel High School with the class of 1961. On May 16, 1964 she married Darwin Matthies at St. Ann Catholic Church, St. Anna.

She worked a short time at Hansen Glove, Kiel, Sargento Cheese, Elkhart Lake, Leverenz Shoe Company, New Holstein. Mary Ellen worked as a Certified Lab Technician at Land o' Lakes, Kiel for over 24 years until she retired. In her earlier years she had also been an Avon Representative.

Mary Ellen had been a Charter Member of the Kiel Jaycettes and served as Treasure; she was also a member of the Christian Women of SS. Peter and Paul Parish as well as the Kiel Red Hatters.

She enjoyed working outside in her flower gardens, painting on canvas, shopping, traveling and getting together with their card club. Mary Ellen's family and grandchildren were very special to her.

Mary Ellen was a proud 23 year cancer survivor.

She is survived by husband of 51 years: Darwin; three sons: Darrin (Jodi) Matthies and their children: Brenna, Caleb and Micha, Kaukauna; Bradley Matthies (Angela Kannich) and his children: Elliot and Erik Matthies, Manitowoc; and Brian Matthies (fiancee: Sarah Matthias), Manitowoc; and one sister: Sharon (Richard) Holzman, Kiel. Mary Ellen is further survived by one brother-in-law and her favorite sister-in-law: David and Lillian Matthies, Kiel, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents: Gerald and Bernice Wick, and her mother-in-law and father-in-law: Harold and Inge Matthies.

Funeral Services for Mary Ellen will be held at 6:00PM on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home (815 6th Street) Kiel. Officiating at the service will be Deacon Pat Knier, with entombment at Knollwood Chapel Mausoleum.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 from 3:00PM until 5:45PM.

In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in her name.

The family would like to thank Dr. David Deubler, Dr. Suzanne Grimm along with the nurses and staff at Sharon S. Richardson Hospice and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic for all of the care and compassion shown to Mary Ellen and her family.
