Aaron was called "Upper Aaron" to distinguish him from his cousin Aaron (born 1768, died 1844, a son of Benjamin). The sister of "Upper Aaron" was married to the other Aaron.

During the Long Run Massacre on September 13, 1781 Aaron was able to escape harm by running through the forest and holding the tail of a horse while crossing the rain swollen Floyd's Fork of the Salt River.

Aaron was married on May 31/June 2, 1791, in (old) Jefferson County, Kentucky, to Elizabeth Griffin.

Aaron lived in Brown Township. He and Elizabeth were among the first members of the Waveland Presbyterian Church of Browns Valley.

Besides the children listed having memorials John also had the following children whose death and/or burial information is unknown:
**Mary Van Cleave, born October 24, 1793, in Shelby County, Kentucky, died post-1875, possibly in Texas. Marred on January 1, 1815, in Shelby County, Kentucky, to Thomas G. Van Cleave (son of Ralph Van Cleave and Lydia Coombs.
**Rachel Van Cleave, born December 20, 1799, in Shelby County, Kentucky. Married January 1822, in Shelby County, Kentucky, to William Hedden (born circa 1799, died circa 1836).
**Sarah Van Cleave, born December 9, 1811, in Shelby County, Kentucky, died between 1837-1840, in Montgomery County, Indiana. Married July 22, 1830, in Montgomery County, Indiana, to Crawford Van Cleave.
