Alexander Axton served in Company A. 123rd Illino Infantry in the Civil War.

He enlisted on Aug 1, 1862 in Charleston, IL and was mustered into Company A. 123rd Illinois Infantry on Sept 6, 1862 at Mattoon, IL. He was described as a 23 year old native of Greencastle, IN residing in Charleston, IL. He was a married farmer 5' 9-1/2" tall with light hair and complexion and blue eyes. His regiment fought at the Battle of Perryville and then became part of Wilder's famous "Lightning Brigade". They were mounted and armed with Spencer repeating rifles. They were in the Battles of Hoover's Gap, Chickamauga, Resaca, Dallas, New Hope Church, Kenesaw Mountain, and the Siege of Atlanta. He was mustered out at Nashville, TN on June 28, 1865 following the end of the war.

He married Clarinda Anderson in Coles County, IL on May 27, 1860.

In the 1880 Census of Hutton Twp. Coles Co., IL Alexander is listed as 41 born in 1839 in Indiana residing with his wife Clarinda age 36 and their children Mary 14, Thomas 12, Lida 5, and Sarah E. 2 all born in IL.

He died on Nov 11, 1894 and according to "The Prairie Sleeps" he was buried in the Alexander Cemetery in Hutton Twp., Coles County, IL.
