Wheatley Davis, 85, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, in a local health care facility.

He was born May 30, 1917, in Decatur, Ala., to Wheatley Thomas and Mamie Whyte Davis. Mr. Davis traced his ancestors to the American Revolution, a fact of which he was very proud. Raised in Memphis, he graduated from Memphis Technical High School and attended Memphis State University before volunteering for service in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II.

While stationed at McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla., he met and married Evelyn Perocchi, his wife of 62 years. He saw service in the China-Burma-India Theater, flying the "Hump" where be was wounded in 1945. Honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant first class, he returned to Memphis and joined St. Louis Terminal Warehouse Company, from which he retired in 1973 as Southeastern regional vice president.

After moving to his wife's home near Plant City, Fla., Mr. Davis' retirement was short lived as he was called to the sales division of the Traveler's Company During his tenure with Traveler's he worked from offices in Atlanta and Orlando, Fla., and received the company's highest sales awards.

A second retirement was to St. Cloud, Fla., where he enjoyed family, boating, fishing and cooking his specialty, barbecue. Ill health and the need to be nearer to their family brought Mr. and Mrs. Davis to Chattanooga in 2001. His parents preceded him in death along with his sister, Mrs. Christopher W. Harlow of Danville, Va.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Perocchi Davis of Chattanooga; a daughter, Frances (Mrs. Andrew B. Rittenberry Jr.) of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wheatley Davis Jr. (Robin Core Davis) and Jonathon Whyte Davis (Melissa Kilpatrick Davis), all of Atlanta; and four grandchildren, Andrew B. Rittenberry III of New York City, Davis M. Rittenberry of Lookout Mountain, Wheatley Robert Davis and Jonathon Whyte Davis Jr., both of Atlanta.

The family offers recognition of special gratitude to Mr. Davis' caregiver, Ms. Sharon Luster.

Services will be private.
