Adam Hagen, 97 of Hubbard Lake, passed away Friday, January 8, 2016 peacefully at home with his son and daughter by his side.
Adam was born in Detroit on September 10, 1918 to the late John and Sophie (Gryciewski) Hagen. He was raised in Hamtramck and graduated in 1936 from Hamtramck High School. When riding his bike around the block to do the shopping, he got to know Stella Poplawski, whose family operated a corner grocery store. He and Stella were married on March 16, 1941. She preceded him in death on April 8, 2013.
During WWII, Adam spent four years in the United States Coast Guard, much of that time on the eastern seaboard. He was proud of their motto “Always Ready”. In 1947, Adam joined the Detroit Fire Dept., and served for 31 years retiring in 1978. For almost all of those years, he worked a variety of second jobs to provide a little extra for his family. After retirement, he and Stella moved to Hubbard Lake where the family had vacationed for 20 years.
They enjoyed both summer and winter activities and always looked forward to family visits, especially with their grandchildren.
Surviving are his son, Donald of Hubbard Lake, daughter Diane (William) Bell of Bonita Springs FL., daughter-in-law Karen (Norman) Birr of Sterling Heights, MI; granddaughters, Stephanie Hagen of LaJolla, CA, Natalie (Stuart) Norris of Boca Raton, FL and a grandson Derek (Lindsay) Bell of Danbury, CT. He is also survived by great grandsons Bodhi Hagen, Will & Ben Norris and great-granddaughter Emmy Bell.
Besides his wife, Adam was preceded in death by his son David, brothers; William and Walter, and a sister; Jenny Podgurski.
