Lt. Commander Walter Lee Greene, U.S.N. (RET.) Allentown, GA- Walter Lee Greene Lt Commander USN Retired passed away from complications of Alzheimer's on Thanksgiving day November 27 2014 in Fort Collins Colorado. Walter was born in Allentown Georgia on March 22, 1921 to Herbert and Ruby Alley Greene. At the age of 21 Walter enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Pacific theater during WW2. From April 1943 to July 1944 he served with squadron VP 72. From April to September 1945 he was part of the VPB 117 squadron piloting PB4Y (aka B-24) bombers out of Maguire Field at Mindoro Island in the Philippines. Walter continued serving his country in the Naval Reserves until 1981. Walter received 7 Air Medals and 3 Distinguished Flying Cross medals for his service. In November 1945 he met the love of his life Helen Swisher in Cleveland Ohio. Helen and Walter were married in April of 1946. They lived in the Hudson-Twinsburg Ohio area until 1989, after which they moved back to Walter's home town of Allentown Georgia. From 1989 unitl 2012 Walter and Helen lived in Dublin Georgia. Walter was a building contractor and loved working on projects. Walter and Helen were avid square dancers and golfers. In 1995 they ventured to Scotland to play golf and were spectators at the British Open at Saint Andrews. Walter was preceded in death by his father Herbert, mother Ruby, and brothers George and Herbie Greene. Walter is survived by his wife Helen of 68 years, daughter Elizabeth Laubhan, son in-law Rich Laubhan, and grandson Erick Carse. The family would like to express their gratitude to Collinwood Memory Care in Fort Collins Colorado and Halcyon Hospice for their loving care and support. Funeral arrangements are pending.
