Major John Dexter was the third son of Rev. Gregory Dexter. He was most emphatically a religious, a military and a business man. He had a good farm, on which he lived and died, and which is still owned by his great granddaughter, Anna Dexter, aged seventy years. He was married at the age of thirty-six, and had nine children. He was the principal staff and dependence of his father, in his advanced age, in matters of business; and filled acceptably several public stations, and was a man of capability, energy and responsibility. His widow afterwards married Hon. Joseph Jencks, Governor of the State of Rhode Island. His military commissions, his Will and other interesting papers are in the possession of Lewis Dexter, Jr., of Providence, as alluded to in the foregoing note on James. He was elected twenty-one times to the General Assembly, under the charter of Charles II.
