Columbus was the third son of Hiram and Eliza Adams Sebring from Ohio with siblings: John, Frank, Leonard, Martha Florence, George, and Fletcher. He first married Emeline Boyd on 13 February 1881. He was widowed and his second marriage was to Elnora Mary "Nora" Rogers on 12 November 1894 in Hardin County. They had Cecilia (1911-1911), James, Davis, and Jay Kenneth. After her death, he married widow Mary Elizabeth Corrier Tubbs Shull Megahey on 27 February 1915 in Marion County. They divorced and on 26 November 1924 in Marion County, he married Mollie Russell Kennedy. Columbus was an iron melter. He died in the Marion County Alms House at the age of 74 years 8 months and 13 days.
