Mrs. Bernice Gentry Hemric Benton, 74, of Elkin died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood, S.C. Mrs. Benton was born Oct. 12, 1928, in Surry County to Monleth and Beatrice Gentry. She was retired from the Sample Store and was a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Benton was preceded in death by two husbands, Ivan Henderson Hemric and Gaither Benton; a stepdaughter, Darlene Southard; and a sister, Lestine Shumate. Surviving are her son, Ivan Hemric Jr. and his fiance Pam Irion of Elkin; three daughters, Vivian (Alan) Combs of Jonesville, Becky (Ricky) Newman of Elkin, and Sherry (Bud) Holleman of Hamptonville; a stepdaughter, Jeanie Hutchens of Jonesville; 11 grandchildren, Chad Hemric, Crystal Bauguess, April Myers, Justin Myers, Tiffany Myers, Jim (Michelle) Benton, Brian (Jennie) Benton, Robin (Jackie) Minton, Missy (Brent) White, Mandy (Dale) Mullis, and Neil (April) Holleman; four great-grandchildren, Jade St. John, Josh Mullis, Lakyn Holleman and Adyen Myers; six stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Coleen Kennedy of Elkin; a brother, Dalin Gentry of Jonesville; and her special friends at the Woodrun Apartments. The funeral service for Mrs. Benton will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at Fall Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Hudson. Mrs. Benton will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Benton family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fall Creek Baptist in honor of Bernice Benton.
