Retired police officer 'was larger than life'

Don Beuk of Simcoe cut his teeth as a police officer on the mean streets of Toronto.

However, when he started his family, Beuk and wife Rhelda decided to raise their children in an area where the pace of life was slower and more civilized.

After serving for nine years with the Metro Toronto force, Beuk transferred to the Haldimand-Norfolk Regional Police in 1975. He transferred to the Haldimand-Norfolk OPP when the HNRP was disbanded in 1998. Beuk retired in 2003 with the rank of sergeant.

Beuk died in hospital in London on Thursday. The cause of death was a staph infection that did not respond to antibiotics. He was 63.

Beuk was a good friend of Sgt. Scott Tomlinson of the Norfolk OPP. The pair served together as shift supervisors for many years. They were also members of the Who-Did-It Club in Simcoe. The club lends basic hospital equipment to sick and recuperating people who need the devices in their homes.

"Donnie was larger than life," Tomlinson said Friday. "He would give you the proverbial shirt off his back to help you out. He was very loving and very caring. He was a good guy."

Beuk was born in Toronto and raised in Weston. He graduated from Emery Collegiate before signing on with the Metro Toronto Police in 1966. While in Toronto, Beuk was stationed at 12th Division.

After moving to Simcoe, Beuk became a leader in the local scouting movement. Beuk himself earned the rank of Queen's Scout. He served from 1982 till 1993 as chair of the 2nd Simcoe Boy Scouts at Trinity Anglican Church.

"Don was a Queen's Scout," says local scout master Harvey Mitchell, 94, of Simcoe. "That's a pretty high honour. He used to wear his Queen's Scout ring. Whenever anyone in the 2nd Simcoe got their Queen's Scout ranking, Don would help them get their silver ring. He was a great golfer, a great lad and great with the kids. He did a lot of great work."

Beuk also served as the Norfolk OPP's parade marshall for many years. He would lead the police contingent at Remembrance Day observances in the local area and would travel to police funerals and memorial services across Ontario and in the United States on behalf of his fellow officers.

Beuk was predeceased by his wife in March, 2010. She too died of a fatal infection. Beuk's brother-in-law Don Sheehey, of Port Perry, also died Thursday. The cause was a long-standing lung ailment.

"It's been an incredibly terrible year," son Derek said Friday. "But you either ride the wave or get crushed by it."

Beuk was an avid golfer. He also played hockey and softball on a recreational basis and was a lacrosse referee when he was younger.

Beuk has been cremated. There will be no funeral service. However, the family will hold a celebration of his life this spring at the Greens at Renton. In his retirement, Beuk served there as a marshall.

Along with son Derek, Beuk is survived by daughter Lisa, mother Gwen Beuk of Norview Lodge, grandchildren Tyler and Matthew, brother Jim (wife Sue) of Dundock, sister-in- law Doreen Sheehey of Port Perry, and sister-in-law Marj (husband Keith) Howe, North Bay.
