Martha, who went by Mattie, was the eldest child born to William Alexander Dunlap and Amanda Branham, both of whose families were among the earliest settlers of Kentucky after the Revolution. She grew up in the Pisgah area of Woodford County, where her great grandparents (Dunlap & Gay) were founding members of Pisgah Church in 1783.

Mattie married on 10 Oct 1865 to William Clark Arnett and kept an intermittent diary of life on their farm near Versailles from 1874 to 1903. She raised five daughters who all married Woodford County men, and although three of them removed to Florida, they corresponded frequently, visited back & forth regularly, and remained close to their mother throughout her life. Her eldest daughter Iva had no children, her only son William Ellison never married, and they both died in 1905.
