William, who went by Clark, was the eldest of five children born to Ellison H. Arnett & Emily Moore. He grew up in Fayette County and adjacent Woodford County KY, and served in the Confederate Army with Gen. John Hunt Morgan's 4th and 5th Kentucky Cavalry Regiments.

He married on 10 Oct 1865 to Martha Tavner Dunlap and they raised six children in the Versailles and Fair Grounds districts of Woodford County. According to his wife's diary, Clark operated more than one farm, had his own hemp brake, threshed his own wheat, cut ice, and operated an ice house. Obituary published in "The Woodford Sun" on 09 Nov 1911:

"William Clark Arnett, one of the most prominent citizens of Woodford County, died at his home in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood in this county Monday evening at about 6 o'clock.

"Mr. Arnett had been in bad health for years. For several months he had been confined to his bed. William Clark Arnett was born in Woodford County about 73 years ago. Upon the breaking out of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army and was a brave soldier in Morgan's Cavalry. He had been engaged in farming all his life and was well known throughout central Kentucky. Mr. Arnett had long been a faithful member of the Christian Church. He was an elder in the New Union Church, was a Knight Templar, and was formerly on the Board of Magistrates of this County.

"He is survived by his wife and four daughters; Mrs. E. H. Taylor of Tampa, Florida; Mrs. S. W. Watson of Atlanta, Georgia; Mrs. William Steele Jr. and Miss Margaret Arnett of this county. He was a brother of State senator B. M. Arnett of Nicholasville and Joseph W. Arnett of Chicago.

"Mr. Arnett was a man of the highest character whose influence was always for good and who enjoyed the respect and sincere esteem of all who knew him. He was one of the best citizens Woodford County possessed and his death is a loss to the county as well as to his own family and to his personal friends.

"The funeral services were held yesterday morning at half past 10 o'clock at his late residence and were conducted by the Rev. Mark Collis of Lexington and Mr. Arnett's pastor, Rev. Leslie Baker."
