Frank M. Maltby, 78, retired insurance company representative and a member of the Galesburg Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, died Wednesday at 6:40 p.m. in Cottage Hospital after a long illness.
Funeral services will be Friday at 3:00 p.m. in the Kimber and West Chapel, where friends may call this evening between 7 and 9. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Maltby had represented the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for 47 years until his retirement Oct. 1, 1943. He was the first manager of the company's Galesburg office, serving in this capacity for nine years until transferring to the field training division.
He was appointed by Mayor Leo W. Morrison to the Galesburg Board of Police and Fire Commissioners in 1953 and was reappointed by Mayor William Small to a term which has another year to run. Mr. Maltby was active in other community affairs, including YMCA and Boy Scout work. He was a former member of the Galesburg YMCA Board of Directors and a past president of Prairie Council, Boy Scouts of America. He was a longtime member of the Galesburg Club, serving three years on the board of directors and as president in 1938. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Alpha Lodge 155, AF & AM.
Mr.Maltby was born July 6, 1881, in Braidwood. He lived there for 36 years, at Joliet four years and in Galesburg the past 36 years. He was married in Joliet Aug. 19, 1903, to the former Myrtle Murray, who survives. The Maltby home is at 418 N. Kellogg St.
He also leaves a son, Edwin F. Maltby of Granada Hills, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. George M. (Juanita) Palmer of Joliet and Mrs. H. Dale (Marie) Gunther of Galesburg; five brothers, D.V. Maltby of Plainfield, Harold of Monterey Park, Calif., John of Florida, Wesley of Prior Lake, Minn., and Willis of Joliet; two sisters, Mrs. Peter Yerley of LaCrosse, Wis., and Mrs. William Hardy of Plainfield; nine grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
