James was the third child of Hiram and Sally Bond Edwards, of Wilson County, TN. He grew up in Wilson County, Civil District 20, and married Lucinda Jane Hollandsworth on October 2, 1842. There were four children born to that marriage: Hiram, William, Martin, and Sarah. The children are correctly shown in the 1860 census in Lincoln County.

Lucinda disappeared from the records after the 1850 census, and is assumed to have died. James remarried to his cousin Sarah Edwards in 1857, and they moved to Lincoln County, TN. James and Sarah and five children are in the 1860 census in Lincoln County, District 17. (The fifth child Haywood is not in the digital version of the census.) Sarah is the mother of the last child Haywood.

James died during the Civil War. His family has no knowledge of a cemetery grave, a death record, or a military unit. Sarah finished raising the children, and remarried in 1866. As far as is known, Haywood was her only child.

James was my 4g grandfather.
