Arthur "Art" Aarestad, 83, of Elk River, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006.

He was born April 5, 1923, to Oswald and Lizzie (Engen) Aarestad in rural Kintyre, N.D. He attended elementary school in the Kintyre area. Mr. Aarestad worked on local farms until 1944, when he was inducted into the Navy. He went through basic training in Idaho and went aboard a Navy tanker on June 10, 1944, where he spent the next 19 months. He was discharged on May 17, 1946.

He again worked on local farms until 1952, when he went to Minnesota and started working in a factory. This became his occupation for the rest of his working career. He really had no hobbies, but he loved to hunt and fish.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Aug. 26 at Union Congregational Church, Elk River. Interment was private. Arrangements were made by Dare's Funeral Home.

Mr. Aarestad is survived by sister, Lily Lyrek; brothers, Leonard and Don; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Willard and Clarence; nephew, Tim Davidson; and brothers-in-law, Alton Davidson and Albert Lyrek.
