Earle Dodge Holmes, 80, a Eureka resident for 23 years and active in business and community affairs until his retirement a few years ago, died Saturday morning at his home, 1624 Harris street.

Born at Ceres, New York, on May 7, 1875, Holmes came of Eureka in 1932 to be area agent for the Texas company until his retirement from active business life several years ago. Prior to that he had managed and owned hardware stores in Olean, New York, and Casper, Wyoming. In both cities he was influential in establishing water and land conservation projects, and a large oil refinery in Casper.

He was a chamber of commerce president and county supervisor in Wyoming, and a president of the Mountain State Hardware Association, headquartered in Denver, Colo.

A church member all his life, Holmes was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Eureka, was formerly a YMCA president in Olean, and for many years had been a member of the Masonic Lodge. A past grand in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Holmes received his 50-year jewel from Sequoia Lodge 15 in Eureka several years ago.

Surviving are his wife, Florence M. Holmes; a daughter, Mrs. Gale (Margaret) Gorsuch; a niece, Mrs. William (Betty) Scott, and a sister-in-law, Margaret V. C. Douds, all of Eureka; a brother, Mark M. Holmes of Olean, New York; several nieces and nephews living in the east.

The funeral rites have been set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, in the Pierce Mortuary, with the Rev. Warren Davis, Presbyterian minister in Arcata, officiating. Inurnment will be at Ocean View Cemetery*.
