Macon, GA- Dora Lou "Honey" Mayes, 80, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 3, 2016.

She was born on October 15, 1935 in Zebulon, Georgia. She was the youngest of six children born to the late Herman L. Hawkins and Effie Presley Hawkins. She is survived by one brother, Benjamin Thomas Hawkins of Covington, Georgia.

Dora graduated from Zebulon High and later graduated from the Macon Hospital School of Nursing in 1957. She met her husband, Dr. Alva L. Mayes, Jr., while in Nursing School and on December 28, 1956, they were married. This past December, they celebrated 59 years of marriage.

Dora was a loving and supportive wife to Al and will be forever remembered by her five children, Pam Kent, Patti Graves and her husband, Harry, all of Macon, Jeff Mayes and his wife, Denise of Juliette, Joey Mayes and his wife, Molly of Woodstock, and Peggy Newman of Gray, as well as her nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dora was actively involved in her children's activities by serving among other things as Room Mother in all five of their classrooms at one time or another. She also loved to entertain and with the slightest hint of an opportunity or finding out a family member might be coming into town, before you knew it, a party had been planned.

Dora was a member of Vineville United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the Mac Anthony Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Surburban Garden Club and the Sewing Club. She was an avid bridge player where she played in two separate bridge clubs playing almost every Tuesday and Wednesday mornings as well as Duplicate Bridge on occasion. Dora enjoyed homemaking and entertaining, reading, playing card games, crossword puzzles and traveling. Each family member always had a birthday party to make them feel how special they were. She will truly be missed.

In October of 2009, Dora became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was extremely proud of the fact she was a relative of Alexander Hamilton Stephens, the Vice President of the Confederacy and Governor of Georgia in 1882.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 6, at 2:00 p.m. at the Vineville United Methodist Church, with Dr. Jimmy Asbell, Jr. and Dr. Marcus Tripp officiating. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery. The family will greet friends at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street on Friday, February 5, from 5 – 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue, 31204 or Hospice of your choice.

Snow's Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street, has charge of arrangements.
