In 1945, Irma met the love of her life, Arthur Rice and they were married, June 22, 1947 in Mt. Vernon. They started their life in Winthrop.
Irma worked at Atwoods Store, then Depositors Trust before starting to work for her beloved Town of Winthrop in 1977. She became Town Clerk in 1980, a job she loved and held until 1990. She continued to work as a Ballot Clerk until 2014.
Irma was a member of the Winthrop Congregational Church where she served as a Deaconess. She was also a founder of the Fun After School program. Irma touched many lives and was loved by everyone who knew her. She was a strong willed, compassionate and loving woman.
Irma was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Arthur Rice, in 1997; her parents; sisters, Alberta Butterfield and Opal Smith and her companion of 14 years, Ezra Smith.
She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Demo and her husband, Shane, of China; her beloved brother, Leroy A. Smith, Jr. of Winthrop; her nieces, Celia Smith, of Readfield, Brenda Corkum and her husband, Elwood, of Chelsea, Blendine Butterfield, of Wayne and Pauline Butterfield, of Mt. Vernon, nephews, Leroy A. Smith. III and wife, Marie, of Vienna, Sid Smith and his wife, Annette, of Mt. Vernon, and Donald Butterfield, of Mt. Vernon; her granddaughter, Jessica Turcotte and her husband, Ryan, of Monmouth; and three very special great-granddaughters, Lily, Clara, and Ava Turcotte; several great-nieces and nephews; her granddogs, Tater and Bailey; Jane Deane, of Winthrop who was like a daughter to her, and Joe Palleschi, of Mt. Vernon, who was a friend, neighbor and loving support system for Irma and her family.
Irma's family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Manor for the wonderful care, love and support they gave to her and her family these last few months.
