He is the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth “Betty” Harding (nee - Schiffler). Father of Patricia Middleman Westburg and the late Douglas Harding. Grandfather of Melissa Firman and her husband William, Jr., Edward “Ted” Middleman and his wife Wendy and the late Alexis Harding. Great grandfather of Rachel Firman, William Firman III and Jessica Middleman. Brother of Dorothy Ziegler and Janet Bull.
John was born, raised and educated in Philadelphia, attending the old Northeast High School in the city. He was inducted into the United States Army on March 17, 1941 and was involved in the Algeria French Morocco, Naples Foggia, North Apennines, Rome Arno and Tunisia campaigns with the H & S Company 21st Engineers during World War II. He was honorably discharged on July 3, 1945 after reaching the rank of Sergeant. After the war he was employed as a machinist for the Philadelphia Manufacturing Company from 1946 until 1975 and for Owens Corning from 1975 to 1985, when he retired. He was active in the Primetimers of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Mayfair and was a youth basketball coach.
Relatives and friends were invited to his funeral service Monday, June 29, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Mayfair, Hawthorne and Tyson Avenues, Philadelphia, PA 19149 where friends were invited to call after 9:00 A.M. A graveside service and military honors rendered by the United States Army immediately followed at Forest Hills Cemetery, Byberry Road and Philmont Avenue, Lower Moreland, PA 19116.
