Angeline Artis filed a pension application after her son Joseph died while serving as a Private in Company K, 54th Massachusetts Infantry of the United States Colored Troops. Angeline's pension certificate was dated 3 January 1868, and she received $8 per month. On the 29 April 1867, Martha Holmes and Elizabeth Ashworth, both of Champaign County, Ohio, swore to have known Angeline for ten years and that she had been dependent on her son. On 3 December 1867, James W. Handley and Martha A. Holmes, residents of Urbana, Champaign, Ohio told a court that they were well acquainted with Angeline, and confirmed that she had been a widow since her husband James Artis died on 27 July 1854, and had been dependent upon her son since that time. Joseph "procured wood, provisions, paid rent and bought clothing for his mother…to the amount of not less than one hundred dollars for each and every year of her widowhood." Angeline was supported by Joseph's military pay, as well as "her own exertions together with the charity of friends."
