Violetta L. Shaffer, 91, of Grant Street, Berwick, died Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Berwick Hospital Center.
Born March 9, 1924 in Berwick, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Anna (Galligar) Grasley.
After graduating from Berwick High School in 1941, she went on to study Teletype with Western Union.
She subsequently was employed as Telegraph Operator at Western Union in Berwick and Bloomsburg, eventually retiring from Robert Jenkle Construction Company as secretary.
Violetta was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Berwick. Among her hobbies were needlepoint and word puzzles.
She was preceded in death by her daughter: Sherry Ann Shaffer, who died in 1973; three brothers: Clark, Robert, and Harry Grasley; and two sisters: Marqueen Samsel and Dorothy Kline.
Surviving are her husband of 70 years: Julian Shaffer; and her sister: Sandra, wife of Richard Taylor of Berwick.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 20, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 721 Monroe Street, Berwick, with the Rev. Dennis G. Dalessandro, her pastor, officiating as Celebrant.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation.
Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Berwick.
