Ruth D. Aken
MUNISING -- Ruth D. Aken, age 82, of 314 W. Onota Street, Munising, died on Thursday, October 25, 2001 at 3:15pm at the Munising Memorial Hospital. She was born on February 18, 1919 in Munising to the late Frank and Selma (Johnson) Eklund. Ruth graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1937. On May 11, 1940, she married Bernard R. Aken. Ruth was a homemaker and a member of the Eden Lutheran Church in Munising. She was a past member of the Pictured Rocks Golf and Country Club, the Smear League at the Country Connection and she and Bernie had belonged to the dance club in town. Ruth enjoyed being outdoors and loved working in her yard and on the beach of the family camp on Mirror Lake. She would spend hours on the beach cleaning and fixing it up by hand. She was a wonderful baker and a tremendous cook.
Ruth is survived by her husband of over sixty-one years, Bernie of Munising; four sons and daughters-in-law, Gary (Beverly) Aken of Munising, David (Kathy) Aken of Fostoria, Ohio, Bernie, Jr. (Phyllis) Aken of Austin, TX and Michael (Jan) Aken of Sandusky, OH; 9 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a brother, Robert Eklund of Hulbert; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by their daughter, Karen Louise Aken Moore on June 7, 1970, a brother Roy Eklund and a sister, Ruby Kelly.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 8:00pm. Pastors Kurt and Mary Beth Kovanen will conduct the funeral on Monday, October 29, 2001 at 10:00am at the Eden Lutheran Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery.
