Anne G. Leader
October 21, 1933 - October 16, 2022

Anne Gardner Leader passed away on October 16 after a brief illness, just days before her 89th birthday. Anne was the daughter of Joseph and Blanche Gardner who resided in Pinner, Middlesex and later, Portsmouth, England.

After gaining civil service status as a secretary who could manage dictation and type 120 words per minute, she sought adventure in the form of applying and winning an overseas post with the British Embassy. These posts would take her to places like Ankara, Turkey as an administrative assistant to the Naval Attaché. Having a dry, Brit's sense of humor, Anne was delighted that her first boss was named Captain Cook!

Anne often pointed out the beauty of nature to her friends and family and recalled that during her time in Turkey, she loved seeing multiple storks' nests on the top of chimneys, the fig trees that dotted the beaches and the Istanbul skyline which was filled with majestic mosques.

Her next post took her to Bogota, Columbia, where she enjoyed the fact that the temperatures there were always between 50 and 80 degrees, and one could see both blossoms and leaves in evidence year-round. She further liked to recall that she was in Medellin when it was the orchid capital of the world, not the drug capital of the world.

Anne's last post was as secretary to the Minister of Research and Development at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. Being new to the area, Anne called the National Federation of the Blind to volunteer and found herself at an orientation luncheon reading the restaurant menu to Fred Leader, whom she eventually married. Anne moved to Pennsylvania where her husband lived, and the two embarked upon 26 years of all sorts of adventures - buying a farm in Wellsville and raising championship Alpine goats, growing bull calves into steers, and creating a large Christmas Tree farm. They also found time to make regular 50-mile tandem bike rides and to spoil their young nephews and nieces. Anne was a most devoted partner to her blind husband and allowed him to see and experience the world through her eyes in many ways.

After Fred's death, Anne moved to Country Meadows of Hershey for her last great adventure. She made wonderful new friends, tried many new hobbies, and shared her love of gardening there.

Predeceased by her husband, Fred, and both of her parents as well as a nephew, Alex Janeczek, she is survived by three cousins in Ontario, Canada and by Fred's siblings, David Leader (Liesa), Michael Leader (Karen) and Jane Janeczek (Ted) as well as numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces.

Anne used her 88 plus years here on earth well. She was a gentle and quiet individual, who reminded all of those who knew her to remember to take great joy in small wonders.

Visitation will be from 9:00AM-10:30AM on Friday, October 28 at the Hoover Funeral Home in Hershey with a memorial service to follow at 10:30am. A burial service with family will occur at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Country Meadows Co-Worker Foundation, 830 Cherry Drive, Hershey, PA. 17033. Many thanks to all the staff of Country Meadows of Hershey who provided support to Anne during her nine-year time living there.
