During the Civil War Clement joined the Confederate Army and served in Company F, Turney's First Tennessee, from 1861 to 1862. He had to resign after one year due to the loss of sight in both eyes. He only partially recovered, eventually resulting in blindness in one eye. He remained in Franklin County, Tennessee and served as the County Court Clerk from 1871 to 1882.
