Ellen Hegarty (or Heagerty) was born on March 2, 1829 in Ballyhoulihan, a farmstead near Rosscarbery, Cork County, Ireland to Denis Hegarty (or Heagerty 1795-1865) and Mary Barry (1803-1856). She grew up with 9 other siblings. She immigrated to New Orleans, Louisiana, USA around the mid-1850s and became a Catholic nun with the Marianites of Holy Cross in 1858. Two of her sisters would also become Marianite nuns in New Orleans. She was a school mistress. Her name became Sr. Helen Hagerty (Sr. Mary of the Cross). She died on October 2, 1868 at the age of 39. She was buried most likely at the Mausoleum of Our Lady of Holy Cross College, Algiers, New Orleans.
