Honora Hegarty (or Heagerty) was born on October 30, 1837 in Ballyhoulihan, a farmstead near Rosscarbery, Cork County, Ireland to Denis Hegarty (or Heagerty 1795- ca. 1865) and Mary Barry (1803-1856). She grew up with 9 other siblings. She immigrated to New Orleans, Louisiana, USA around the mid-1850s and became a Catholic nun with the Marianites of Holy Cross in 1858. Two of her sisters would also become Marianite nuns in New Orleans. Her name became Sr. Ann Hagerty (Sr. Mary of St. Marguerite). She died on April 17, 1899 at the age of 61 and was buried most likely at the Mausoleum of Our Lady of Holy Cross College, Algiers, New Orleans.
