Bert Emerson Scofield, son of Allen and Ritta (Flowers) Scofield, was born February 10, 1921 on a farm near Pine City, MN. He grew up on the farm and received his education in country school. He then worked as a farm hand on area farms.
At age 17, Bert left Pine City do forestry work with the Civilian Conservation Corps in northern Minnesota. He lived in a barracks and earned $30 a month. He sent $25 of this home every month to help his family.
Bert entered the U.S. Army on August 24, 1942 at Fort Snelling, MN. He served as an antitank gun crewman with the Antitank Company of the 112th Infantry in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe during World War II, including fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged on November 17, 1945 at Fort Snelling.
Bert was united in marriage with Rose Jorgensen on June 30, 1953 in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls. Bert worked on a construction crew and later served as a custodian in public schools before retiring. He became a resident at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, MN in 1997.
Bert was a member of Central Baptist Church and the American Legion.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Rose; two sisters, Ruth Truckenbrod and her husband, Robert, Minneapolis, MN, Ione Ericksen and her husband, Robert, Rush City, MN; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and a sister.
