Zella was born on Feb. 25, 1932, in Hannibal, Mo., to Chester and Hazel (Higgs) Mahoney. She grew up in Pasadena, Calif., and graduated from Washington High School in 1950. Zella earned her nursing degree and worked in California for many years as an emergency room nurse.
Zella married Steven Yurak on Feb. 25, 1951, in Pasadena. They eventually moved to Glendora, Calif., where they raised their twin sons, Jeff and Steve.
Zella moved to the Seattle area in 1989 after the death of her husband. Zella was trained as an opera singer in Hollywood, and sang in a pop music group that had several well-known hit songs in the late 1950s and early 1960s. She enjoyed antiques, and owned an antique store in California. Most of all, Zella loved her family and friends and enjoyed activities such as watching her son, Jeff, play professional baseball. In her later years, Zella spent time studying the Bible and being involved in church functions.
Zella will be missed greatly by her loving sons, Jeff (Lorene) Yurak of Lake Tapps, Wash., and Steve Yurak of Bonney Lake, Wash.; her grandchildren, Aaron (Natalie) Hanson and their children, Aubrie and Carter; Andy Hanson, and Adam (Chasity) Hanson and their daughter Catherine, all of Lake Tapps, Wash. Zella also left behind many nieces and nephews, including Bobby (Teri), Colleen, Tracy, Kelly, Mike and Fred Mahoney and their families, all of California. Also Gary (Linda) Goodale, Nina Rainbolt, and Jan (Ron) Atkins, and Shirley Hill, all of California.
Zella was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother, Robert Mahoney. Interment at Eternal Hills Memorial Garden in Klamath Falls, Ore.
