In 1856 he moved with his family from Tennessee to Shelby Co., Texas where his father obtained 1200 acres of farm land. He lived there and worked the farm until 1862 after Texas seceded from the union when he and his younger brother, Gabriel Rudolphus Washington "Dolph" Corley joined the Confederate States Army. The older brothers, Winslowe and Alelbert has joined the Confederate Army the year before.
Following the War of Northern Aggression, he returned home to Shelby Co., Texas. In January of 1870 Alf married Frances Katherine "Fannie" Clardy who was the daughter of Dr. James H Clardy. Dr Clardy had been the best friend and Masonic brother of Alf's father, COL E. T. Corley since they emigrated to Texas.
