Deceased was born in Lee Township March 22, 1850, and had spent the majority of his life in this vicinity. After completing his common school education he entered the Harlem Springs Academy, where he studied for several terms. January 14, 1875, he married Miss Sarah Fraim in Wayne County, Illinois. Mr. Guess joined the Mount Olivet Christian Church early in life, later becoming a member of the Bergholz congregation.
He is survived by his wife and two children, Mrs. Minnie Ray, living near Bergholz, and Emmett Guess of Carrollton, as well as five brothers, Edwin, Winfield, Hamlin, Cleremont and Frank Guess. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Melissa Shepherd and Mrs. Nora Massay. Funeral services were held in the Chestnut Ridge Church Monday, with Rev. Cummings of the Bergholz Christian Church and Rev. Ault, pastor of the Chestnut Ridge Methodist Church, officiating.
