Tribute to Departed Worth

A Friend's Tribute to the Memory of Mrs. Mary E. Mulkey

The hush of a marvelous power is upon my soul as I attempt to gather fitting words with which to clothe the sentiments of my heart in regard to the worth and exalted character of her who so lately was the joy and comfort of her household, and a constant source of inspiration to her loving friends, but whose pure spirit has passed from its early tenement to enter upon the realities of that "home of the soul," where her lofty, aspiring mind so often dwelt.

I feel I do but voice the sentiment of her friends, whose name is legion, both in this city, where she so long has dwelt, as well as those elsewhere, when I say that, whether we contemplate her as a woman, a Christian, a mother, a friend, as the gentle mistress of her beautiful home, where every one who entered received a royal welcome, or as the dispenser of benefits, both temporal and spiritual, to all who came within reach of her influence; her character, strong, beautiful, symmetrical, shines with a luster undimmed with a perceptible flaw, and unrivaled among all those with whom I have mingled during the more than a score of years it has been my sweet privilege to call her friend.

Her intellectual powers were of a very high order. Her mind, ever alert, and grasping after knowledge, was marvelously quick to catch, apply and assimilate truth, and just as rapid in detecting flaws in argument and errors in doctrines, new or old.

Her knowledge of the Scriptures was simply marvelous, and many will recall the golden hours spent in her parlors, of Sunday afternoons, listening to her words of wisdom, as she brought forth treasures, both new and old, from the book of books.

Her mind was too broad to be bound by narrow or bigoted views upon any subject, and her reading embraced a wide and varied range. She found a peculiar fascination in books of ancient lore, and was well versed in archaeology, and was interested in all the wonderful discoveries going on in the Old World, as well as the marvelous advancement made in the arts and sciences, and, indeed, all that pertained to the uplifting of the race, and the betterment of mankind.

Upon religious themes her mind was as clear as a drop of dew, and, above all, her religion was her life, and the wellspring of so much happiness that her joy was contagious, and reached every heart that came into her presence.

We shall miss her as the months and years go by, for this world contains but few such rare spirits as was hers, and though I feel my poor words have but faintly touched the theme I have undertaken, yet with a full heart I bring this simple tribute to the memory of her whom I have loved, do love, with an affection ardent as it is sincere. M.C. Portland, January, 1898.

Mrs. Mary E. Mulkey, widow of the late M.F. Mulkey, died at the family residence, 357 Twelfth Street, at 3 P.M. yesterday. For a week she has been on the brink of death, and the relatives, except a son, were at the bedside when she expired. Wednesday she was stricken with apoplexy, when her attending physician, Dr. George F. Koehler, announced that recovery was improbable. Fred W. Mulkey, one of the sons, who had been studying law in the East, was summoned home, and will reach here with two or three days. Mrs. Mulkey was born at New Haven, Conn., November 14, 1836. In 1862 she was married to Marion F. Mulkey, and immediately thereafter moved with her husband, who had just been graduated from Yale college, to Oregon. Mr. Mulkey resided here previous to his college course, and had a home for his bride. Two sons survive the parents, Frank M. Mulkey, now being at home, and his brother, on the way. The husband died in 1889.
