Peter Raab was the third eldest of the seven children of Pancretius Raab (b. approx. 1833, Strassgich, Bavaria) and Barbara Lehuetz Raab (b. approx. 1831, Nendorf, Bavaria). In 1870 the family had a small farm near Towson; by 1910, Peter's elder brother, George (b. November 1862, Baltimore Co., MD) was farming on Belair Road at White Marsh Run, and Peter was working as a stonemason. He married Emilie Brockmeyer (1871-1900) in 1890, and with Emilie had five children: George Peter Raab, who married Anna Mina Koppelman; Amelia (1893-1894), Peter John, Anna (1895-1897), and Gregory George.

After Emilie died, Peter married her sister Anna Brockmeyer (b. approx. 1879, Baltimore Co., MD), with whom he had eight more children.
