He was a master carpenter for Belmont Builders. Mr. Wenger was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son in Idaho. He took his nephews and grandsons on many local fishing expeditions and often fixed them breakfast on the cook stove outdoors.
In his retirement years, he painted many oil paintings of outdoor scenes. He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church. Roy will be remembered for his witty humor, gentle demeanor and gracious manor.
On November 24, 1943, he married the former Mary Frances Charlton, who survives. He was a devoted husband and companion for 73 years.
Also surviving are a daughter, Carolyn Phillips and husband, Wayne, of Broadway; a son, Dick Wenger and wife, Terri, of Salmon, Idaho; one brother, William Wenger of Rockingham; three sisters, Geneva Brunk and Pauline Nice, both of Denbigh, Va., and Janet Bollinger of Rockingham; eight grandchildren, Berkly Trumbo, Bradly Trumbo, Richard Wenger, Molly Hamilton and Gavin Phillips, Megan Fiore, Vanessa Fiore, and Colton Blomberg; and 10 great-grandchildren, Madeleine Trumbo, Sebastian Trumbo, Livia Wenger, Kiaya Wenger, Connor Wenger, Kylie Phillips, Tristian Phillips, Meghan Phillips, Wyatt Hamilton and Faeth Hamilton.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Susan Wenger.
His niece, Chaplain Melanie Wylie, conducted a funeral service Sunday afternoon, March 20, 2016 at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Weavers Church Cemetery. The casket was closed.
