REBURIAL SERVICE TO BE HELD SUNDAY
Reburial services for PFC Rufus Lee Abbe will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the First Baptist Church with Clifton Laird, Chaplain of the Burch Bros. Post of the American Legion in charge.

His body will arrive here this morning (Friday) and will lie in state at the Goodrich Funeral Home until Saturday when full military honors will be accorded.

Pfc. Abbe was born May 24, 1923 and died June 30, 1944 as the result of wounds received on the Island of Saipan on June 29.

He was born in Marietta but his family moved to Walters at an early age. He attended school in that place. He was a Junior in High School at the time he enlisted in the U.S. Marines Corp. He was a machine gunner and was attached to the 2nd Division in South Pacific from January 6, 1942 to June 30, 1944. During this time he was in three of the major engagements, Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Saipan. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Asiastic Pacific, American Defense, Presidential Unit Citation with two stars and the Victory Medal.

Rufus lost his mother at the age of three years and his father, A. L. Abbe, passed away on June 5th, 1948.

He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. B. L. (Eva) Barfield of Marietta; Mrs. Sid McWhorter, Chickasha; Mrs. Maxine Abbe of Comanche; and Mrs. Ellen Eddington, Bakersfield, California; two brothers, John Alexander of Bakersfield, California; Ralph Abbe of Gainesville; two step-sisters, Mrs. J. J. Gore and Mrs. Bennett Smallwood both of Walters; and one step-brother Mr. Earnst Smith of Walters.

The Court Of Honor at the American Memorial Park in Saipan, Northern Marianas Islands honors the American and Marianas people who died in "Operation Forager" (the battles for Saipan and Tinian), and the Battle Of The Philippine Sea during World War II, in June-July 1944. The Court Of Honor has 26 granite plates inscribed with the names of 2,875 Marines, 1,824 Army and 505 Navy personnel who were either killed or listed as missing-in-action. One of these is Abbe, Rufus Lee, PFCU.S. MARINE CORPS, 2ND MARINE DIVISION Plate 1, Column 1, Battle of Saipan. The Battle of Saipan lasted from June 15 to July 9 1944
