William Hays enlisted in the North Carolina militia in 1780 for a 6 month tour under Col Charles McDowell at Gilbert Town in Rutherford Co, N.C. Later that fall, Hays journeyed to Kentucky but, in spring, 1781, was drafted for 6 months of duty under Col Hugh McGary for the purpose of fortifying Fort Clark at the Falls of Ohio at Louisville and in defense of the country from Indians. He stayed in Kentucky until fall 1785 before returning to North Carolina. In 1798, William's family moved permanently to Warren County. His 900-acre plantation was 7 miles east of Bowling Green on the north side of Barren River.
