Pauline Hill Massey, age 104, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 12, at her residence at the Appalachian Christian Village in Johnson City, TN. Mrs. Massey was born on September 3, 1896 in Whiteside, TN and was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. W. W. Hill. In 1901 the family moved to Roane County and then to Harriman where Mrs. Massey attended public school. She graduated from Harriman High School in 1913, then again in 1914 when the school added a 12th year to the curriculum.

In 1922, Mrs. Massey married William R. Massey, longtime Harriman postmaster, who died in 1972. She was an active member of First Christian Church where she served as Sunday School teacher and Choir Director for many years. She was also a strong supporter of the Harriman city school system and the Civic Music Association. She served as Visiting Teacher in the school system for many years and was an avid golfer at Emory Golf and Country Club until age 95.

In 1990 at Harriman's centennial celebration she was recognized as the oldest living graduate of Harriman High School. And on September 3, 1996, the city of Harriman celebrated an official Pauline Massey day in honor of her 100th birthday. She lived in Harriman until 1993 when she moved from her home on Morgan Street to a retirement village in Johnson City.

Mrs. Massey is survived by her sister, Nancy Hill, and by two children, Kay Mayfield of Elizabethton, TN and Charles Massey of Chattanooga; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be Thursday at 4:00 pm at Kyker Funeral Home in Harriman. Visitation will begin at 2.00 pm on Thursday and burial will follow the funeral at Oak Grove Cemetary in Rockwood. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made in lieu of flowers to First Christian Church or the Harriman Alumni Association.
