James Bentham was born at Witchford where his father was Vicar. He spent his whole life in the area and died a Prebendary of the Cathedral. His history of Ely Cathedral was published in 1771. Bentham was one of the most learned historians of the time and he was also responsible for the Turnpike Road from Ely to Cambridge - the first of a series of schemes undertaken by him for the improvement of the Fens.
