AGED CONFEDERATE CLAIMED BY DEATH AT KINGSTON SATURDAY

ELIJAH WHITWORTH

Elijah Whitworth, 80, one of the few remaining veterans of the Confederacy, died at the family residence in Kingston last Saturday morning at 11 o'clock.

The deceased was a pioneer resident of what is now Marshall county, having lived here for the past forty years. About four years ago he moved to Kingston from the farm and has been confined to his bed for about three years.

The deceased was born June 19, 1847, in Franklin County, Missouri. He entered the service of the Confederate States when quite young, taking a brother's place in order that the brother might return home and look after the family.

In 1864 he was married to Miss Sarah Boyd and to this union was born eight children, four of them now surviving. All were present at the funeral with the exception of a daughter. In 1901, Mr. Whitworth was again married. His widow survives.

The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church for forty-seven years.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist Church in Kingston, the pastor, the Rev. Shelton conducting. Interment was made in the Kingston Cemetery under the direction of the Watts Funeral Home.

The children surviving are: Mrs. Mollie Gray of Amarillo, Texas; Mrs. Ida French of Wichita Falls, Texas; Mrs. Florence Thomas of Wichita Falls, Texas,; and W.A. Whitworth of Healdton, who was in Madill Saturday.
