Radio Pioneer. A skilled radio engineer and inventor of a wireless telephone known by some as America's Number 1 Amateur. After meeting Guglielmo Marconi as a young boy he began building and experimenting with wireless radio equipment. By 1912, when the government began licensing radio operators he received license #1. During World War I he served as a US Navy radio operator and soon began operating his own station, W1ZE. He soon earned the position of managing the Marconi Wireless Station WCC, a transAtlantic station, later he ran the RCA station in Marion, Massachusetts. Following the closure of WDAU, the first station in New Bedford, Massachusetts which he built in 1922, he opened WBBG from his home. In 1925 he started and operated a new station, WNBH, believed by some to be among the oldest radio stations in the United States. Later in his career he became the first American to receive a permit to operate in Canada.
