Carlson, Dorothy Lee RENSSELAER Dorothy Lee Carlson, 78, passed away on March 11, 2016, with her family at her side following an illness of cancer. Diagnosed in November, she handled her illness with characteristic grace and dignity. Born in Sioux Falls, S.D. on May 4, 1937, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Arlene (Ingalls) and Leo Langley. She met her future husband, Gary Carlson, in 1956 at the local pool where he was a lifeguard. They married on June 30, 1957, and lived in various locations (Sioux Falls, Wagner, S.D., Columbia, Mo., and Estes Park, Colo.) before settling in New York State. After raising her children, Dorothy became a rostered Associate in Ministry (AIM) in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She served faithfully in parish and institutional settings, at St. Luke's in Ithaca, (1983 - 1986), St. John's Lutheran Church in Albany (1987 - 1993), and as a chaplain for Our Lady of Mercy Life Center (1993 - 1996) and finally for Hospice of Rensselaer County from which she retired in 2002. Dorothy served as a mentor to several women who, with her as a role model, found their vocations in ordained Lutheran ministry. She was affectionately known by them as "our foremother in the faith." In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, David Langley. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 58 years Gary; and their two children, Paul (Debbie) and Ingrid (Roger). In addition to her family, she will be keenly missed by dear friends and those for whom she served as an abiding spirit and a woman of great passion and faith. Friends may call on Friday, March 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Wm. J. Rockefeller Funeral Home, 165 Columbia Tpk. Rensselaer. All are invited to attend a funeral service at First Lutheran Church, 181 Western Ave, Albany at 11 a.m. on March 19. A celebration of Dorothy's life will follow the service. Her remains will be interred at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery in Fairview, S.D. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/timesunion-albany/obituary.aspx?pid=178032369#sthash.4zYqobqm.dpuf
