Hampton L. "Hamp" Austin a resident of Pennybyrn at Maryfield and former resident of Greensboro passed away on March 11, 2015. He was, born July 1, 1926 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, the son of the late Harry Burks and Amanda Pearl Totten Austin. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Becky and his son Mike.

A WWII veteran, he served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theatre of Operations and the early occupation of Japan. Hamp attended Marshall University where he met the love of his life Mary Dandelet Austin. He later graduated with a Bachelor degree in Business Administration from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.

He was honored in 2010 with a trip to Washington, D.C. to view the WWII memorial with the Honor Flight program. This was one of the highlights of his life. Hamp was an avid Duke basketball and a Washington Redskin fan, and loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports.

Hamp retired from ITT/ Paul N. Howard Company in 1986, where he was Vice President and Director of Personnel and Administrative Services. He enjoyed working with people starting as Personnel Manager for ITT/Federal Electric Corp, a support contractor for NASA at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. FEC was involved in all of the Apollo Lunar Missions. Transferred to Greensboro in 1977, when ITT acquired Paul N. Howard Co, and International Construction Company. As Director of Personnel, Hamp was responsible for staffing large construction projects throughout the U.S., the Caribbean and several Mid-East countries.

He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and Council 939 Knights of Columbus.

Hampton was a very loving husband, father and grandfather. Survived by his wife Mary; recently celebrating 66 years of marriage this past December 27th. Also surviving are son, Keith Austin and grandson Chris; daughter Cindy Michalowski and her daughter Mary; son Phil Austin, his wife Kelly and children Rachel and Ryan; Kathleen Lawrence, her husband Terry and children Stephen, Nick (wife Rachel), and Ben and grandchildren Joe Intravaia (wife Annie and their children Kenny, Joey and Mary); Johnny Intravaia (wife Mandy and son Dominic with another child on the way).

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 4145 Johnson St., High Point, NC 27265 with Father Vincent E. Smith, OSFS officiating.

Memorials may be made in Hamp's memory to the charity of donor's choice.
