Thomas Keith Austin was the son of Harry Burks and Pearl Totten Austin. He graduated from White Sulphur Springs (West Virginia) High School in 1938.

Watertender First Class Thomas Austin served in the United States Navy during World War II, on the USS Henley. On October 3, 1943, the Henley was struck by a torpedo near Finschafen, New Guinea. Fifteen crewmen, including WT1C Thomas Austin, were missing after the ship sank. WT1C Austin was reported Missing in Action on Oct. 23, 1943.

Thomas Austin was lost at sea. The memorial in this cemetery is a cenotaph. He is also honored at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial
