Daughter of Benjamin Owen and Tamar (Harnden) Preston. Married Joseph Sawyer 3 May 1846 in Blanchard, Huron, Ontario, Canada. Joseph Sawyer was the brother of Mary's stepmother Emily (Sawyer) Preston.

Mrs. Mary Sawyer died at the home of her son, J. M. SAWYER, in Detroit, on February 23, 1908, at the age of 81 years,4mos. & 37days. Grandma Sawyer was born September 27, 1826 in the Township of Darlington, Durham County, Ontario. She was married to the late JOSEPH SAWYER May 3, 1846, and was the mother of nine children, five of whom survive:

MRS. D. LIVINGWAY of Downington, Michigan.
MRS. D. ERVIN of Lovells, Crawford County, Michigan.
J. M. SAWYER of Detroit, Michigan.
24 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren
She and her husband came to Deckerville New Year's Day, 1864, and the country at that time was a comparative wilderness. Deckerville at that time was comprised of a log shanty, a frame shanty, and the old log schoolhouse. (Three buildings.)
They settled on a farm three miles East of here in the Spring of 1866 where they resided until the year1884, when they moved to the Depot where she has since lived except the last five years. Her husband, JOSEPH SAWYER, departed this life August 12, 1895, and since that time she has lived with her son Joseph. Mrs. Sawyer also leaves two brothers, THOS. W. PRESTON of St. Clair, Michigan and JOHN O. PRESTON of Black River Falls, Wisconsin. She was a member of the M. E. Church, which she joined in the Village of Kirkton, Ontario about the year 1856.
Grandma Sawyer was an affectionate wife and a inter- and loving mother beloved by all who knew her. The funeral was held at Downington on Thursday, and the remains interred in the D&D Cemetery (now Downing) beside those of her husband.
