James Adams

James Dennis Adams of Martin and Seagrove Beach, Fla. entered into eternal life on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast in Miramar Beach, Fla. He was 62 years old. His family was by his side.

James was born on July 8, 1950 in Blue Island, Ill. to James Riley and Dorothy Newberry Adams. The family moved to Martin in 1960 where he entered the fifth grade at Martin Elementary School. It was there that he met his future wife, Gloria Lykins. They married on July 12, 1969 at Martin First United Methodist Church. Their marriage of 43 years was a blessing to their friends and family. James was a longtime member of Martin First United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees. He enjoyed expressing his faith and often spoke of the blessings of witnessing to others about Jesus and His promise of life eternal.

James was a graduate of Martin High School. In the summer of 1969, he joined the Tennessee Army National Guard. His military career spanned 30 years. During his full time active duty, he served in Martin, Dunlap, Dickson, Waverly, Erin, Trenton, Millington, Milan, Camden and Union City. He was an honor graduate of several military schools. In recent years, he worked as a building contractor. James and Gloria moved to Seacrest Beach in the fall of 2010 and have enjoyed their second home on Scenic 30A for the past two years. James had worked for friends along the beach as a builder. He was also an accomplished designer and artist.

James leaves behind his wife, Gloria Lykins Adams; daughter Tiffany Adams Taylor; son-in-law Scott Taylor; son, Jeff Adams; mother Dorothy Adams of Martin; sister Debbie Greenlee of Lakeland, Fla.; one grandson Jackson Taylor; four granddaughters Candace Caroline Taylor; Ashleigh Lauren Taylor; Alexandra Summer Taylor; and Grace Ellen Adams. He was preceded in death by his father, James Riley Adams; brother, Richard Adams; and parents-in-law, John and Modean Lykins.

Christian worship services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012 at Point Washington United Methodist Church with Pastor Spencer Turnipseed officiating. Because of James' long military career, Rev. Jeff Ryan, former chaplain in the Tennessee Army National Guard and current chaplain at Sacred Heart Hospital, provided special military remarks. Rev. Ryan conducted the graveside service where he presented to Gloria the American Flag in honor of James' service. He was buried at Gulf Cemetery in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. It was James' final wish to be buried close to the Gulf of Mexico.

The family plans to have a service of remembrance in celebration of James' life at a later time in Martin. All of his friends and family will be welcome.
