Monroe Rutty showed up at the Ottawa County poor farm in 1907, after an accident, saying he did not know who he was, and was given the name Joe Steel, and celebrated his birthday on May 15. 58 years later, a relative recognized him after reading a newspaper article about him on his 105th birthday, but the named Joe Steel stayed with him. His correct birth date was found written in an old copy of the Bible the family had. He died at the Ottawa County convalesant home, reportedly the oldest person in Michigan at the time, and was buried next to his mother.
