US soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pvt Atcheson was described as 5'-5", hazel eyes, brown hair with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as brick molder. During the Civil War, Atcheson enlisted into the volunteer army. He was eventually promoted to the rank of sergeant. After the Civil War, Atcheson enlisted into the regular army. Between April of 1868 and May of 1868, Atcheson served as an orderly to General Phil Sheridan. On August 21, 1871, while posted at Meridian MS, Atcheson's enlistment expired. He reenlisted the same day and was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company F was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Atcheson was killed. After the battle many soldiers from Company F were found on or near Last Stand Hill. Lakota and Cheyenne warrior participants of the battle later spoke about the soldiers in this area, probably F Company, putting up a good fight in what appeared to be a rear guard action, until they were overwhelmed. There was no record that Atcheson's remains were identified. It was likely his unidentified remains were first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
