"During the evening of May 19, 1864 a Union patrol in east Lafayette County wounded a guerrilla (Bushwhacker) and saw him suffer a bad fall from his horse while they were chasing him.
During the the evening of May 20th the local Union command sent 2nd Lt. James E. Teal and a patrol of the 1st Missouri
State Militia to find this man.
Teal's patrol found and executed on the spot, badly wounded, 22 year old, northesat Cass County blacksmith, Benjamin Watkins."
