He reigned as King of Provence most of his life (even as a boy), but was to become H.R. Emperor in 901 A.D. for five years only. A failed invasion of Italy at the end of that time frame leaves him blind. In 914, he weds Adelaide, daughter of Rudolph I of Upper Burgundy; this perhaps not the first marriage for Louis, as he had previously fathered a son, Charles-Constantine.
