James Cook was the son of Edward Cook and Nancy Ann Thomas.

He married Sarah Collis January 10, 1815 in Rutherford Co., NC.

The couple had ten children: Aaron, John, Mary "Polly", Elizabeth, Naomi, Nancy, Susanna, Elminer, Jesse, and James Chafon Cook.

Two of their sons, Aaron and Jesse Cook, served in the Confederate States Army.

Aaron survived the war, but Jesse lost his life at Talley's Mill, VA May 10, 1864. Jesse was married to Rosanna Kennedy and had two sons: Doctor F. Cook and Patterson Cook.
